According to the World Health Organization, digital games can be addictive.
Why is it shocking that computer games can be addictive? Is the game addictive or is it the gambling on casino computer games that is addictive? It seems that a person can be addicted to anything. Cable television stations offer shows that display any and every kind of addiction imaginable.
What is the big deal? The new diagnosis, “gaming disorder” is when someone’s life is disrupted by too much time dedicated to video or computer games. Gaming disorder is when too much time spent in computer games causes negative consequences to one’s life. People can be addicted to anything. Is this really new or just another symptom of something that is wrong.
Will new DNA technology identify a gaming gene? Can you imagine this news story, “Scientists identify a gaming gene!”? How does a computer gaming gene get into the human genome? Let’s get real. Someone having a problem with computer gaming is just a symptom of a deeper problem.
“It’s only a game.” When computer games first became available to the public, there were some instances of problems. Check back the film archives for an early Tom Hanks move, “Mazes and Monsters”. Tom Hanks is a normal college student who became obsessed with a Dungeons and Dragons game. The game took over his life. His fantasy world became too real.
Video games from the 1980s required imagination for game play. Today’s games use high powered processors and graphic card to display movie like adventures. It doesn’t take imagination to “see” a character or game environment. Think of older video games like a book. The author describes the environment and your imagination gives you the picture.
Problems were observed very early with video games. Immediate effects could be heart problems caused by the music and rapid game activity. Are you a high scorer? Does a rapid action video game calm your nerves? Most people had increased heart activity during rapid “shoot em up” games. There are enough things in normal life to cause stress. Do you want another cause of stress? Consider a game of solitaire or chess for relaxation.
Computers should make our life easy but there are always drawbacks to any new technology. Think about nuclear power and all the problems that accompany it. Does anyone want a nuclear reactor in their back yard? Do you remember Three mile island or Chernobyl?
Almost any new technology can be abused and cause people harm. Is the problem the technology or the person who abuses it? Does your computer gaming cause you or your loved ones problems? Realize that you have a problem and take action to address it.
