Do you use a laptop? Are you using a wireless connection to the Internet?

Almost everyone that has a laptop is using a wireless connection to the Internet. Is your wireless connection working? A common symptom that your wireless connection isn’t working is “I can’t read my email …” The problem may not be with your email, it could be that you don’t have a reliable Internet connection.

Connection problems will only get worse as the number of wireless routers increase. More people going wireless will only make the problem worse. A router that is close by may be generating interference and causing a connection problem with your computer. Wireless routers are supposed to sense channel problems and move to a less utilized channel but that doesn’t always happen. There are a limited number of channels to use if there is an interference problem. An interference problem could also be from cell/cordless phones and electrical equipment.

Newer routers use different frequencies that support more channels. You should also be aware that you need a computer that supports the newer wireless frequencies if you plan on taking advantage of the new frequencies. You may have an older laptop that requires an upgrade to use newer router frequencies.

You bought a new laptop. It powered up and is able to surf the Internet. What if you aren’t able to surf the Internet? How do you trouble shoot the problem? Is your laptop connected to the wireless router? Look for the wireless icon on the lower right of your desktop. Does it indicate that you are connected? If it displays available networks, connect to your network. Do you know the wireless key? If your modem/router is supplied by your network provider, the key is usually printed on a decal on your modem router.

If the icon states that you have a good Internet connection, you may have a problem with your browser. Your browser is the program that you use to view the Internet websites. You may have to check your browser settings to allow it to connect to the Internet.

You might think that connecting your computer to a wireless network seems overly complicated. Networking is much easier today than it was 30 years ago. Devices weren’t standardized. You needed a manual to be able to connect a device to the Internet. Today, most things are “plug n play”, plug them in and they just work.

Connection problems are a common problems to troubleshoot. You don’t have to be a computer genius to determine the problem but you do require a logical mind. Make sure that you understand what you are doing before you attempt a computer repair. Your ”brilliant” solution might create a mess!
