Is that a virus on your computer?

How do you know that your computer has been infected with a virus or other malware? Is your computer slower than the day that you first turned it on? Do you have a reliable virus scanner? All anti-malware programs are not the same. Is your anti-malware up to the task?

If you don’t realize that your computer is infected, you can’t fix the computer. An effective virus will disable the antivirus program on your computer. The virus takes over your computer. How is the anti-virus program going to help if it allowed the virus into the computer in the first place? Removing viruses and other malware is almost an art. You are not going to find any program that does it all for you. You don’t have to be a computer genius to remove viruses but you need some skills.

What if you don’t think that you are up to the task of virus removal? Formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows is a sure fire way to clean your computer. If you format the hard drive and reinstall Microsoft Windows but YOU WILL LOSE ALL OF YOUR FILES! Backup or save any files that you consider important BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO FORMAT THE HARD DRIVE. When someone is asked if there are any important files on their computer, they usually respond that there is “nothing” important on their computer. When reminded that pictures are files, they change their answer.

Keeping a copy of any important files is a good idea to allow you to recover from any virus that encrypts files. It is too late after the horse is out of the barn. If a file is important, BACK IT UP! Financial documents can always be replaced but pictures of your kids from 20 years ago can’t be replaced. Don’t lose your important memories.

Make sure that you know what you are doing before you attempt an unfamiliar task on your computer especially when you have important files on your computer. If you don’t know what you are doing, ask someone with experience. Make sure that your “expert” knows what they are doing. Do you have confidence in your expert? Does your expert explain why a particular action is taken during a procedure? Fancy words don’t mean anything if the expert doesn’t understand basic concepts.

Are you a good observer? Do you know when the computer isn’t working correctly? “It takes too long to do anything on the computer.” Is this your complaint? How are you going to fix the problem? Believe it or not, a lot of people buy a new computer without any understanding of the problem and what it takes to fix it.
