Is your computer ready for going back to school?

Summer is full of distractions to keep you away from your computer but you should consider checking it out before depending on it for classroom duties. Turn on your desktop or laptop. Did it start normally? Were there any strange pop ups? If the computer hasn’t been turned on in a while, there might be some required updates that are completed. Updates have been known to cripple computers. Better to find out before you need to write a term paper due tomorrow that you have a sick computer.

If you depend on your laptop for portable use, is the battery ok? Does the battery have enough run time to do the job? Batteries do degrade over time. Each charge/discharge cycle will cause the battery to decrease its serviceable lifetime. All batteries are not created equally. Consider low cost, HIGH quality batteries. Some battery providers are known to produce junk. Check the Internet for reviews on the battery provider before you commit to a purchase.

If your computer didn’t power up, you had better do some scrambling. “It won’t start up…” is not a good description of the problem. Does the computer display anything on the screen? Does anything light up? Does it make any noise when you “flip the switch”? Is it plugged into a good outlet? When you describe the problem, you don’t need to consider what you ate for breakfast unless you spilled a bowl of milk and frosted flakes on the computer.

Are you able to retrieve your old notes that might be important? How did you save your notes for future use? Memory sticks are not the preferred method for backup but they are better than nothing. It isn’t uncommon for them to get corrupted. Don’t get any bright ideas about “cleaning out” your computer. A backup is a copy, you should keep your important files on your computer and on your backup device. It is possible to store too many files on a computer but current hard drives allow for a lot of files. Your computer only needs less than 10GB to run efficiently. It is only programs that are executing that slow down a computer.

Is your computer going to be travelling to school? It isn’t enough to stuff your desktop or laptop in a box for transport. Consider completely isolating your computer from the outside of the box of shipping container. Place packing material between the computer and the inside of the box. No edge of the computer should touch the container.

Check out your computer before you need it. Don’t wait until the last minute to get it ready for school.
